One of my friends had me editing her M.A. thesis on Afro-Futurism and these particular texts, so I became curious and had to read them. I’M SO GLAD I DID!!!

I just finished reading these, and they are seriously my new favorite books! They are truly amazing pieces of literature.

You can google the summary yourself, but I’m telling you, they are so good. Just dive in.

My friend described one aspect of Afro-futurism as Black people “using the past to envision the future.” Butler does this so well that it’s fucking disturbing. I became invested in the characters early on (Black girl main character.. how could I not feel a connection?) and at certain points I was reading these books like

Especially Talents cause if you KNOW history…. you’re not really trying to go back. The future Butler writes about is one where all the problems we have today have been allowed to just progress without being solved.

Her future looked so damn familiar it scared my black ass. I’m serious. My soul has been disturbed since mid-way through Talents. It was too real.

"God is change."
