The American Dream has been bullshit from the get-go though. The “American Dream” is and has always been a nightmare for POC, particularly Native Americans and Black Americans.

And this imagery makes me… once again… skeptical of the Occupy Movement. I just dunno.

ooops please don’t conflate classism with racism because that’s not an honest thing to do. racism is still alive and well and there are a great number of activists carrying out dr. king’s legacy by fighting it to this very day, so let’s not try to shift the focus of his struggle where it frankly was not and where it does not belong

If you actually listened to what the guy said, he was all about class oppression. The son of the slave is mentioned along with the son of the sharecropper. The insistence on holding up race as holy and sacrosanct apart from class is one of the most crippling things white leftist intellectuals (who have contempt for the white poor) have done to any fight against poverty in this country. And nothing has helped capitalist exploitation more than this narrow, smug ignorance. I do not ghettoize King as a black hero, because I regard him as an American hero.

please don’t appropriate leaders of the civil rights struggle by removing them from the proper context of their struggle and downplaying the role of their race. society has whitewashed dr. king enough as it is, they really don’t need your help

classism and racism are social evils that frequently overlap, but they are not one and the same. conflating the two through a comic that effectively spreads the message that “poor is the new black” not only delegitimizes the daily struggles of PoC, it allows for the struggles of the white lower class to take precedence over those of PoC, reinforcing the same sort of white supremacist system of skewed values that dr. king detested

I thought he was planning to speak out more against the war in Vietnam.. and that’s why they killed him. 

I’m not saying whoever made this is wrong…,I may be wrong… but I’m a little.. um.. concerned about all the Black power fists and Civil Rights Movement imagery used in the Occupy Wall Street Movement thus far. I guess it’s all for inspiration… It just rubs me the wrong way, you know?

exactly why occupy wall street is funny to me. as long as money was used to keep blacks in the underclass, everything is cool. but as soon as they start exploiting the middle class… “OH…..!!! LET’S MOBILIZE! I’M SO OPPRESSED.”

i mean, i hope they succeed but can we all agree that the movement is completely superficial?? this whole concept of “the 99%” is bullshit. as soon as some of that percent gets what they want, everyone will go back to their suburbs and be quiet. and the black (and white, even though they’re clutching too tightly to their bibles, guns, and whiteness to realize their being exploited [although i hear they’re starting to call themselves the tea party lately]) under- and working classes will get to hear them lock their doors as they drive swiftly through their neighborhoods on accident when their GPS sends them the wrong direction.
