It never occurred to me to browse through the credits of Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien, to find out who was underneath the monstrous black mask.

The man was Bolanji Badejo, a 7ft tall Nigerian design student picked up from a bar in West London to fill the title role.  He worked on the film for 4 months. Spending every day wrapped in a suffocating custom fitted rubber suit, working to exude a presence of pure evil.

Despite his incredible contribution to the film’s success Badejo never received any publicity for his involvement. Ultimately, it would be his only film role.

Twerking Snowbird Make Black Women Jealous Video

Ok, so I am infuriated by this video. Like I don’t even know where to begin. Not necessarily by his opinion, but the disrespectful way in which he chooses to express it. I respect your opinion so much and I just want to know what you think of this video in general and hear what you have to say. Thank you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2cAFrEpK6No#!

That was disgusting! I really couldn’t watch the whole thing.

I don’t understand how somebody can be like "Okay, I can overlook society’s obsession with light skin. I can overlook society’s obsession with controlling women’s bodies and how they move. I’m gonna ignore the fact that you can twerk and still be brilliant. I can overlook Whites, for hundreds of years now, slandering Black culture and then stealing it. But what I can’t overlook (and what I’m about to sit here and talk about for 10 excruciating minutes) is Black women’s responses to all these things."

But Black women are the ones “nitpicking,” right? Yeah, whatever Black man. Say whatever you can to get those youtube viewer numbers up to sell those wack ass t-shirts. I know it’s hard out here, considering the unemployment rate for Black men is so high. And there ain’t NEVER been no money in truth-telling.

I know one thing though..

Black men, until you decide to do right by Black women, the Black community will continue to crumble.

What do think of this cover of  Nina Simone-Plain Gold Ring

It’s okay. I wouldn’t cover a Nina Simone song if my voice didn’t have enough soul in it, but that’s just me. Nina just had a special, one of a kind voice. Hard to top that.

What I think is more interesting though is the fact that this video has nearly 2.5 million views… and the original only has 61,000 and most of those views must have come from the many many people in the comments who proudly exclaim “Kimbra brought me here.” In fact, most of the comments under Nina’s video are about Kimbra.

For all that Nina is… and all that Kimbra isn’t, it just doesn’t seem right.

Petition and Protest Against FAU Naming Stadium After GEO Group

I am the Vice President of Florida Atlantic University’s LGBTQIA Club. On Tuesday it was announced that my school will take $6 million from the GEO Group and that our recently built football stadium will take GEO as it’s namesake.

As you may know, the GEO Group is the second largest for-profit prison corporation. Privatized prisons like the GEO Group make profits by incarcerating innocent PoC, immigrants, women, LGBTQ  people, differently abled people, etc.

GEO has been involved in countless scandals: Under-medicating inmates, sexual assault, physical brutality, unsanitary living conditions, poor quality food, etc.

This entire ordeal reeks of inside jobs. George Zoley, GEO Group CEO, got his bachelor and master’s degrees from FAU and was a member of FAU’s Board of Trustees. Abe Cohen, Corporate Relations Manager for GEO, failed to edit the companies Wikipedia page. Cohen was Student Body President at FAU from 2009-2010.

There are two petitions circling. One from Beyond Bars and one from Change.org.

On Monday February 25th from 10am to 2pm, student activists are uniting on FAU’s (ineptly named) Free Speech Lawn then marching to the Administrative Building. A press conference will follow.

I would really appreciate it if you would post this.

Interracism in my community.

There has been racial tension between groups of students for years and for all those years there’s nothing done about it until the 300 student fight. The tensions was never addressed and were overlooked.

Here in Minnesota I can definitely say there is lots of tension between Somolian immigrants, Liberian immigrants, and black people who were born and raised here. Everyone is so quick to say “Oh I’m not African I’m black”. I have even heard and seen Somolian kids deny being Somolian because they are embarrassed. I don’t remember when exactly it started but I do know that it has always been there. The xenophobia that surrounds Liberians and Somolians is just so sad. I honestly can say that it is quite disappointing and disturbing.

The fight, students say, was the result of long-simmering tensions between the 8 percent of students who are Somali  Americans and the 20 percent who are African Americans.”

“I am black; I am in total fusion with the world, in sympathetic affinity with the earth, losing my id in the heart of the cosmos — and the white man, however intelligent he may be, is incapable of understanding Louis Armstrong or songs from the Congo. I am black, not because of a curse, but because my skin has been able to capture all the cosmic effluvia. I am truly a drop of sun under the earth.”
